PREVIOUS CRIMES OF THE MONTH: 2013
December 2013
The Athens Police Department is requesting your information pertaining to four separate criminal acts that occurred in the city:
The first incident occurred on Oct. 4 at approximately 2:50 a.m. The victim reported that she was walking on Kern Street when she was attacked. The victim was knocked unconscious and when she awoke, a male was on top of her brandishing a knife. The victim pled with her male attacker, and he eventually allowed her to leave. The attacker is described as a college-aged white male with blonde hair.
The second incident also occurred on Oct. 4 at approximately 4:15 a.m. A resident of 13 Kurtz St. was awakened by an unknown male figure standing in the dark bedroom. After the victim let out a scream, the male subject fled the scene. Shortly after the male subject had exited the residence, the victim noticed a vehicle, which belonged to a roommate, begin pulling out of the driveway. Police believe the male subject who had just burglarized the residence took the keys to a 2009 Ford Focus, and stole it from the driveway. The vehicle was recovered in Athens County after being involved in a crash but there were no occupants present when law enforcement arrived.
The third incident occurred between Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. and Nov. 21 at 3:30 p.m. Upon returning home, the resident of 50 Walker St. noticed that her basement entrance door had been pried on. Upon closer inspection of the interior of the residence, she determined that items had been tampered with and jewelry and money were missing. During the time the resident was away, a neighbor noticed a red Chevrolet Cavalier parked in the driveway.
The forth incident occurred during the early morning hours of Nov. 26. On this date at approximately 3:10 a.m., members of the Athens Police and Fire departments were dispatched to an active fire at 929 E. State St. (Wal-Mart).The flames were quickly extinguished but there was still moderate damage to the building and extensive damage to the contents/merchandise. A white male subject in his early to mid twenties, approximately 5'8" tall and weighing 160 pounds, was observed leaving the area of the fire just after it ignited.

This incident occurred on Nov. 18 at approximately 5:25 a.m. The resident of 122 S. Green Dr. (Fenzel House), Room 230, advised she awoke to an unknown white male subject standing in her room, leaning over her desk. The male subject stole an item and then fled the area. The male is described as 5'7" to 5'10", thin to average build, reddish beard, and wearing a black winter hat and a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt. (Composite of suspect appears with this article.)
The Athens County Sheriff's Office is requesting information pertaining to one criminal act:
This incident occurred on Nov. 13 at approximately 11:20 p.m. The residents of 18748 Taylor Ridge Road were surprised when at least two masked men forcibly entered the residence. One resident was struck in the head several times, while the other was shot with a non-lethal weapon. The suspects took a large amount of cash, firearms, and cellular telephones before fleeing the scene. The injuries suffered by one of the residents did require medical attention.
Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous is offering a $2,000 cash reward for information on the above crimes if that information leads to the arrest and indictment of the person or persons responsible.
Information on serious misdemeanors will be limited to a $1,000 cash reward. Anyone with information on these crimes should call 740-594-3331.

May 2013
The first incident occurred at 73 Franklin Ave on February 26, 2013, at approximately 11:30 PM. A resident heard a knock on the door and when he answered it, two black males barged inside. One of the males was brandishing a gun and pointed it at the resident. The male with the gun is described as 5'05" tall and was wearing a black down-filled jacket, black hooded sweatshirt, black toboggan, and dark colored loose-fitting jeans. The other suspect is described as 5'11" tall and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and loose-fitting jeans. Both suspects are estimated to be in their twenties.
The suspects searched the residence and placed two victims in a closet. Two other victims in the residence were placed on the floor at gunpoint and ordered to remain there. The suspects exited the residence and when they felt it was safe to do so, the victims contacted the Athens Police Department.
The second incident occurred at 363 Richland Ave, apartment 362 on April 25, 2013, between 9:30 AM and 10:30 AM. A resident heard a knock at the door and when he answered it, a black male barged in pointing a small handgun at him. Another black male entered the residence carrying a revolver. Another resident who was sleeping was awakened with one of the black males tapping the barrel of the handgun on his head. The suspects took several items, including the residents' cell phones, and then fled the area. One of the suspects is described as a black male, 5'09", 160#, and wearing a black "beanie." The second suspect is also described as a black male, 6'00", 170#, and he is estimated to be between 19 and 24 years of age. The third suspect is a black male and is estimated to be between 19 and 24 years of age.
The third incident occurred at 65 Stewart St, apartment 202 on April 26, 2013, near midnight. The resident heard a knock at the door and when he went to answer it, four black males forced their way into the apartment brandishing handguns. The suspects were wearing garments to partially cover their face. The suspects searched the residence and took several items when they fled the area. Two of the suspects were communicating with each other in Spanish. The first suspect is described as a black male, 5'7" and 170#. The second suspect is described as a black male, 5'10" and 150#. The third and fourth suspects were described as light-skinned black males 5'11",and 130#. The resident and a guest were bound and placed in the bathroom before the suspects fled the area.
On April 20, 2013, at approximately 6:25 PM, the suspect vehicle was west bound on S.R. 56 behind a Chrysler minivan. Witnesses explained that the suspect vehicle described as a silver 2004-2008 Ford F-150, was driving recklessly and struck the minivan in the rear at Kenny Dr. The impact caused the minivan to go left of center and strike a vehicle that was travelling east bound on S.R. 56 in the left side. This impact caused the third vehicle to roll. The suspect vehicle then fled the scene.
The Nelsonville Police Department is requesting your information pertaining to an incident that occurred within the City of Nelsonville. On April 5, 2013, between 6:50 PM and 7:00 PM, a white male suspect entered Fruth Pharmacy, located at 10 W. Washington St., brandishing a handgun and demanding money and prescription medication. The suspect is described as a white male, 5'08", 170#, approximately 40 years old, wearing a black hoodie, black toboggan, dark sunglasses, and blue jeans. After receiving over 3200 prescription pills and approximately $250 cash, the suspect fled out the rear door of the business. Please note due to lighting, the color of the hoodie and the back pack are not as they actually are. The hoodie and the back pack are black.
The suspects searched the residence and placed two victims in a closet. Two other victims in the residence were placed on the floor at gunpoint and ordered to remain there. The suspects exited the residence and when they felt it was safe to do so, the victims contacted the Athens Police Department.

Two Crimes of the Month for March:
The first incident occurred on Jan. 31 at approximately 9:20 a.m. The victim had gone to the dumpster near her residence at Station Street Apartments and was confronted by the suspect wielding a handgun. The suspect then ordered the victim to give him her money. After receiving a small amount of money, the suspect then fled the area on foot towards Ohio University campus. The suspect is described as a 6-1 to 6-2 black male, approximately 30-35 years of age with a goatee, wearing dirty white tennis shoes, jeans and a blue zip up jacket with a hood.
The second incident occurred Saturday shortly after 2 a.m. A confrontation began between the victim and some male subjects in the parking area between Cornwell Jewelers, at 77 N. Court St., and Courtside Pizza, at 85 N. Court St. The altercation escalated and then one of the males stabbed the victim several times before fleeing the area. The suspect was described as a 5-10 white male in his early 20s, weighing between 150 and 170 pounds, with blonde/brown hair, and was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt.

The second incident occurred in Tiffin Hall on Saturday between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. During these times, an unknown person(s) had set approximately eight small fires throughout the building by igniting papers that were hanging on the doors and walls. The fires did result in minor damage to carpet.

Washington St. Between 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2012 and 8:20 a.m. on Friday, October 19, 2012, unknown person or persons gained entry into the premises by forcing open a side entrance door. Once inside the business, the cash register was forcibly opened and money stolen.
The second incident, also a breaking and entering, occurred at The Kick Back, which is located at 61 W. Washington St. Between 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 1, 2012 and 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 2, 2012, unknown person or persons gained entry into the premises by breaking the door glass. Once inside the business, the cash register was forcibly opened and money stolen. Also stolen during the incident were several tobacco pipes and jewelry.
The third incident, a theft, occurred at the General Wok, which is located at 707 Chestnut St. Between 6:40 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 2, 2012, unknown person or persons stole a bag containing a large sum of money. Just prior to the theft being noticed, a male and female couple was in the restaurant and placed an order. After the order was placed, the male and female left the restaurant and did not return.

Green Dr. Between 2:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, November 3, 2012 and 9:10 a.m. Sunday morning, November 4, 2012, person(s) damaged seven light poles (195, 197, 199, 201, 205, 207, and 209). Cost to replace the damaged lights is estimated at over $6000. This is the third vandalism to the bike path lights in the past several months.
