The Athens City Police are seeking your information regarding a large fire on Oak St. on Saturday evening October 18th, 2008 at approximately 8:53 p.m. Athens Police and Fire Department officers responded to the front of 15 Oak St.where a fire had been set in the street. The size of the fire resulted in vinyl siding on the front of the residence to melt, nearly resulting in the house being set on fire. Officers of both departments responded a second time, 9:59 p.m., to a fire but discovered it to be smaller than the first. Athens City Police are requesting information on the person or persons responsible for igniting the fire in front of 15 Oak St.

During the early morning hours of Friday, September 26th, 2008, two subjects entered the rear door of the VFW where they confronted the cleaning person. One of the two subjects then physically assaulted the employee and placed what he thought was a knife to his throat. The two then ransacked the office area in an attempt to locate cash before fleeing the building on foot.

The Glouster Police Department wants your information regarding the robbery of the Glouster Water and Electric Office during the afternoon hours of Tuesday November 4th, 2008 at 3:50 p.m. Three subjects all dressed in what was believed to be Halloween clothing entered the office and began demanding money from the employee of the office. Gestures were made by the subjects, indicating that they had a weapon, and the employee at this time turned over the money to the suspects.
Upon receiving the money, all three suspects fled the office but not before the tallest of the three shot a burst of mace into the face of an innocent bystander who was in the office. The three suspects then fled on foot towards Woodrow St., before running through an alley and turning towards town towards High St. All three subjects were wearing what appeared to be black-hooded masks. One suspect was wearing a red-hooded sweatshirt; another was wearing a gray while the third was described as wearing a black shirt. All three were described as wearing jeans.

The Athens County Sheriff’s Office is seeking your information on several burglaries that have occurred in Carthage Township during the past month. A residence on Fletcher Rd. in Coolville, OH and a residence on Henderson Rd. in Guysville, OH were entered during the earlier part of November. A camera, quarters and set of silverware were taken from one residence while several guns, televisions and jewelry were taken from the other residence.

The Ohio University Police Department is asking for your help regarding the theft of equipment from the Ohio University Campus. A computer with an imaging system was taken from Porter Hall while a ceiling mounted projector was removed from Baker Center . Other electronics, including computers and projectors, have been taken from various other locations.

Athens County Law Enforcement agencies are asking for you assistance in the theft of catalytic converters throughout Athens County . Numerous converters have been removed from vehicles during both night and day time hours and are being sold at scrap yards in Athens County and surrounding counties.

The Athens City Police are seeking information regarding the home invasion of a residence on Church St. on July 26th , 2008. The two suspects, both dressed in all black clothing and wearing masks, one being described as a Halloween mask, similar to the one worn in Scream movies entered the basement apartment uninvited. The two suspects forced the occupants of the apartment into a bedroom where 911 was called and officers responded. Two occupants of another apartment arrived prior to police officers and confronted the two suspects as they left the apartment. During this confrontation, the larger of the two suspects pulled a pistol, revolver, which was knocked out of his hands. Both suspects then fled the apartment towards the rear of Church St . Both suspects were identified as being in their early twenties, black males, with one being described as 6’02” and 175 – 200 pounds. The other was described as being 5’ 10-11” tall weighing 250 -300 pounds.

Athens City Police are also asking for your help in regards to several tool trailers on construction sites being broken into and numerous tools being stolen. These tools include numerous brands of air tools, extension cords, an air compressor and other tools being used to remodel or build inside the City of Athens . Several of these tools have been recovered at local pawn shops and suspects have been identified. However, Athens Police Department still needs information regarding the whereabouts of the other tools that were stolen.

The suspect entered the Athens VFW and removed an undetermined amount of cash from where it was stored inside of the VFW. Cash registers were emptied of any money that each contained along with other cash that had been left inside the club.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Athens County Sheriff’s Office is requesting information on a bank robbery that occurred on Tuesday morning, July 29th, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. A man walked into the Coolville, OH Hocking Valley Bank armed with a gun and completely covered in clothing with no skin or hair color visible. The robber was described as five feet, ten inches tall, skinny and weighing approximately 150 pounds. The robber was dressed in all dark clothing, including some sort of gas mask over his face and the gun was described as a long gun or rifle. After taking an undisclosed amount of money, the robber fled the scene in pewter colored SUV.

The Athens County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service is requesting information regarding two suspected pipe bombs that were discovered early Tuesday morning by a private contractor of the U.S. Postal Service. The first device was discovered sometime around 5:45 a.m. when the contractor was delivering mail to the Guysville, OH post office and upon continuing to the Stewart, OH post office, the second device was discovered. The suspected pipe bombs were described as approximately 12 inches in length, with capped ends and a black central area with tape around them and wires protruding. An unknown liquid was later discovered within the device and is being analyzed by law enforcement authorities. The devices resulted in the main highways through these two communities to be closed and residents to be evacuated for a period of time.

Athens City Police are requesting information in regards to an aggravated burglary that occurred early Saturday morning, July 26th, 2008 at approximately 1:30 a.m.The resident of 4 Church St. reported that two black males entered the residence and that both were dressed in all black and had masks covering their faces. The residents and guests hid in the bedroom of the house while the two unknown subjects attempted to force their way into the bedroom. The resident called neighbors, who lived in an upstairs apartment, for assistance and they were able to block the two burglars from fleeing the apartment. One of the burglars, described as the larger of the two, then brandished a handgun, revolver, and both were able to get out of the apartment. A physical struggle then ensued between the burglars and the neighbors before both burglars were able to flee prior to Athens City Police Officers arrived. Both suspects were last seen heading towards the OU Campus off of Church St.

The Athens City Police are seeking your information regarding the theft of telephone cable from the supply yard of the Athens Verizon Office on Wednesday July 23rd , 2008 during the early morning hours. Person or persons unknown gained entry into the compound by cutting a hole in the chain-link fence surrounding the compound. A very large but undetermined amount of telephone was cut from numerous reels and removed from the yard.

Unknown persons have been using different means of “smuggling” contraband into the regional jail for the past several months. While some items being smuggled into the jail are illegal, other contraband is not permitted within the jail.

Even though the graffiti is thought to be the “art” of certain individuals, this “art” becomes a problem and great expense to others who have to clean it up. Buildings, residences, walls and street signs can be seen throughout the City of Athens with this graffiti, some being “tagging” while other is drawings and paintings.

Vandalism in the Coolville, OH area is having the Athens County Sheriff’s Office request information in regards to the person or persons responsible. During the late evening hours of Monday June 9th and the early morning hours of Tuesday June 10th, unknown person or persons were responsible for spray-painting pictures on businesses, vehicles and stop signs in Coolville. This vandalism resulted in damages estimated to be in the thousands of dollars.

On May 28th , 2008, the residence was discovered burglarized with firearms, cash and jewelry being taken. The sheriff’s office does have evidence regarding the person responsible for this burglary but still need information regarding the persons responsible.

The first call was received at 10:19 a.m. and the caller stated “a number of explosive devices were set to detonate at noon at the county courthouse complex.” Approximately fifteen minutes later, a second call was received telling 911 operators “apparently you’re not taking me seriously.” As a result of these two calls, the Athens County Courthouse and Annex was evacuated and traffic, along with several businesses were closed on S. Court St. and W. Washington St.

The Athens City Police are seeking your information in regards to the abduction and assault of two females. The first occurred on May 8th , 2008 at 2:45 a.m. onFranklin Ave. near Carpenter St . The victim states that she was grabbed a white male who shoved her to the ground, covered he r mouth and un-buttoned her pants. The victim was able to kick the suspect and push him away from her and escape. The suspect was described as in his thirties, muscular build, average height with no visible tattoos. He was wearing a black t-shirt with a Nike Swoop, Khaki shorts and a black hat.

The victim states she was pinned against the wall by the suspect before she was able to kick him and free herself. The victim described this suspect as around 6’00”, 160 pounds, average build and of college age. She reported that he was wearing a dark polo-shirt, jeans and a dark hat.

Court St. and W. Washington St .

The Glouster Police Department is seeking information in regards to a rash of vandalism that occurred during the late evening hours of Monday April 7th, 2008and the early morning hours of Tuesday April 8th , 2008 . Several vehicles, belonging to Miller Brands on High St. , were vandalized as was the menu board at the Dairy Queen. Along with the reward being offered by Athens County Crime Solvers, Miller Brands and the Dairy Queen together are offering a $1,000.00 reward.

The Athens City Police are seeking information regarding several burglaries that occurred within the City of Athens during the latter part of February and first part of March of this year. During this period of time, numerous residences were entered and computer equipment, such as lap top computers and Ipods, and stereo equipment were taken from the homes. On one occasion, a lap tap computer was stolen from the Cornwell Center located at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital.
The Athens County Sheriff’s Office is still seeking your information regarding two bomb threats that were called in to the Athens County 911 Center on Thursday, March 20th, 2008. The first call was received at 10:19 a.m. and the caller stated “a number of explosive devices were set to detonate at noon at the county courthouse complex.” Approximately fifteen minutes later, a second call was received telling 911 operators “apparently you’re not taking me seriously.” As a result of these two calls, the Athens County Courthouse and Annex was evacuated and traffic, along with several businesses were closed on S. Court St. and W. Washington St .

The Glouster Police Department is seeking information in regards to a rash of vandalism that occurred during the late evening hours of Monday April 7th, 2008and the early morning hours of Tuesday April 8th , 2008 . Several vehicles, belonging to Miller Brands on High St. , were vandalized as was the menu board at the Dairy Queen. Along with the reward being offered by Athens County Crime Solvers, Miller Brands and the Dairy Queen together are offering a $1,000.00 reward.

According to the Sheriff’s Department report, the breaking and entering occurred between 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday evening, January 28th, 2008 and 7:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, January 29th , 2008. Unknown person or persons entered a barn and then forced their way into a tack room at the Willow Run Ranch, located on River Road in Athens and removed numerous saddles from the location.

Information is also wanted on the businesses and or individuals who are responsible for buying the stolen copper. These types of thefts are constantly being reported to police departments and are taking place on construction sites, vacant homes, businesses, electric sub-stations, radio/cell-phone communication towers and electric cable wire suspended from poles along highways and county roads.
This type of theft causes disruptions in construction projects, such as vandalism and loss of materials, disruptions in phone and radio services and creates a risk of serious physical harm, even death, to the people who are responsible for these types of theft.

The Athens City Police are requesting information on a rash of car break-ins that occurred during the latter part of December of 2007. Two vehicles were broken into at the Athens Recreation Center and one vehicle was broken into at The Ponderosa on the evening of December 22nd at approximately 6:00 p.m. On the evening of December 29th, five vehicles were broken into on the east end of town, with several being at the Maplewood Inn while others were at the Grand Athena Movies parking lot.

The Oak Room and Toscanos were forcibly entered during the night of Monday January 21st , 2008. Once inside the businesses, unknown person or persons entered the businesses and searched fo r money, resulting in damage to several pieces of equipment in the businesses. A petty cash box was taken from one of the two businesses containing an undetermined amount of cash.

The Nelsonville Police is seeking information regarding an armed robbery that occurred on November 6th, 2007 at the Nelsonville Check Exchange on Chestnut St . A white male described as being in his early 20’s, approximately six feet tall, thin build and wearing a pair of white khaki cargo pants and a blue “hoodie” with a possible fox emblem on the front, entered the business on two occasions. While in the store on the second time, the suspect showed the employee a gun and demanded all the money. The employee complied and gave the suspect the money in the store at which time the suspect left the store. The suspect was seen prior to the robbery and after the robbery driving a black or dark blue Camero or Trans-Am, mid-80’s, and had a white female, described as having a small build and blonde hair as a passenger.

Information is needed regarding a robbery that occurred inside the Blue Gator during the early morning hours of Friday October 19th, 2007. The Athens City Police are needing information regarding a black male in his early twenties, 5’10” – 6’00”, 155 –175, who was dressed mostly in black and had a black, flat-billed ball cap on and who assaulted an intoxicated person. Upon striking the victim and knocking him unconscious, the unknown person then removed the victim’s wallet from his person and fled the business. The suspect was seen leaving with another black male who was dressed in a dark jacket with yellow across the front. Both subjects went south on N. Court St. and were last seen in front of The Junction Bar.

The Athens City Police, Athens County Sheriff’s Office and most other local law enforcement agencies are seeking information regarding the continuous theft of copper and catalytic converters inside the City of Athens and throughout AthensCounty. During the month of October, construction sites located at Krogers, Holzers’ Clinic and the new apartments at the old Landmark off of Palmer St. have been the victims of breaking and entering in which large amounts of copper wiring, on large spools, have been taken. Information is also wanted on businesses or persons responsible for buying large amounts of copper from individuals that is suspected of being stolen.

During the past months, laptop computers, ceiling mounted projectors and other electronic devices have been stolen from Alden Library, Bentley, Wilson, and Brown Halls.
